The

Forget Hollywood, forget Cannes, think Portugal.
Find
out about the rich and famous living it up in the Algarve...
More
and more celebrities have joined expats and holidaymaker's in realising
you don’t have to go too far from the UK to get away from it all.
After all, a quick break in the Algarve, even for the rich and famous, means
less time travelling and more time relaxing by the pool.

Michael Owen Obviously taken with its charms, football’s diminutive heart-throb Michael Owen has purchased a £2 million pad at the luxurious Quinta do Lago estate for his parents. Other famous football faces who have bought holiday homes in the area are Alan Shearer

and Paul Ince,

and their equally glamorous neighbour is multi millionaire ex-DJ Chris Evans

Alan Shearer chose a brand new home on Pinheiros Altos, a golf course development which has had a recent cash injection from its owner Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber. If rumours are to be believed, pop diva Madonna has also invested in a villa at the development, although some believe one of her aides actually owns the home and she merely holidays there. The golf course became “members only” in January 2003, paving the way for even greater exclusivity.
Exchanging the glitterati for a glittering grandad, Clive Dunn,

former Dad’s Army regular, is spending his retirement years living just outside Bouliquime. He is heavily involved in charity work in the Algarve and, amazingly, even ran a marathon recently around the historic town of Silves to raise money for a breast cancer charity.
And on the subject of oldies but goodies, Sir Cliff Richard,

also has a property in the hills at Guia. The property came complete with its own vineyard which had fallen into a state of decay, so as part of the restoration of the villa, the vineyard was re-planted and Sir Cliff is now producing his own wine.
England football “saviour”, Sven Göran Eriksson, has apparently taken the advice of his players and is rumoured to have purchased a home and restaurant a little further along the coast overlooking the bay at Benagil. There, perhaps, he can escape the prying lenses of those troublesome tabloid snappers.

Steve Backley the British Javelin ace and winner of an Olympic silver medal, owns a property overlooking the 18th green at the Pestana Golf Resort, near Carvoeiro. The resort is less than 30 minutes away from Backley’s winter training ground and he integrates the two venues into his fitness programme.
Bruce Grobbelaar

chose the
sprawling fishing port of Portimão as his holiday getaway. As it
happens it is close to the Praia da Rocha – the beach that gives its
name to Portimão’s seaside suburb and a nightspot boasting
bars, discos, clubs and a casino.
England
and Arsenal goal keeper,
David Seaman,

would seem to be in complete control of his area as he opts to holiday in the western Algarve, away from the jet set’s beautiful people and those wonderfully superficial champagne cocktail parties. He always stays at Parque da Floresta Golf and Leisure Resort, located between the Moorish town of Lagos and the historic maritime town of Sagres.
And in case you thought footballers were a rare species in the Algarve – so little mention have I made of them –
Ian Rush

and Carlton Palmer were also taken with this resort and have purchased homes here.
Other familiar
faces whose names may have faded from the limelight but not from our memories
include Goodie,
Tim
Brooke Taylor,

who owns a house in the low key Praia da Luz.
Lionel Blair

is also a freqent
visitor to the Algarve with his wife Susan.
